Racism And Racism - 1567 Words
Societies are corrupt when racism thrives within in them. This is because race separates groups of people by their typical values and morals- what they are raised to think and act upon. He questions the validity of giving Jefferson, a 21-year-old black family friend of his, the death sentence for a c rime he did not commit: ââ¬Å"A white man had been killed during a robbery, and though two of the robbers had been killed on the spot, one had been captured [Jefferson], and he, too, would have to dieâ⬠(Gaines 1). The background of Grantââ¬â¢s thoughts show that he had grown up with the idea of all blacks being unfairly associated with crime and violence. Grant knew that given the background of his time period, that if the murdered man had been black and not white, the consequences for the captured man would have been different. Gaines identifies the corruptness of having race being the deciding factor of whether a person should be able to receive deserving civil rights. Both Gaines and Hurston point out through charactersââ¬â¢ backgrounds the true corruptness of society that limits both themselves and the characters that they write about in their life ambitions. Community standings are based off of race and set conventional standards in a community that is unjust. Janie, in other peopleââ¬â¢s eyes, acts a specific way solely based off of her heritage. Since Janie is mixed with Caucasian descent, others in the black community thinks she acts differently than them and that it makes her a bad person.Show MoreRelatedRacism : Racism And Racism1544 Words à |à 7 PagesTo understand whether or not racism is learnt, we first have to divulge into the nature of racism.
